Dad and Son

Children are hard to understand. No matter how much ever we love them, care for them, get them everything they want, they always give you an idea that they think you don’t love them enough and at times they just make us realize how immature our thoughts are about them.
Once I bought a cycle for my six year old son who jumped out of joy to see the shining new cycle at the porch when he came back from school. He ran towards it screaming and laughing at the same time. I was filled with satisfaction to see that. Not that it was not an expected reaction, but because that’s just what I hoped for. He circled it twice before he slowed down and looked closer and observed each part of it in detail. If someone had asked him how many steel bolts were used in the cycle or how many joints the chain had, no doubt he would have scored a hundred on hundred. I and my wife watched him giggle none stop and exploring his new gift and felt equally overwhelmed with joy. She was so pleased to see her only son so happy and relished every single thing he was doing. She watched him with all the joy she had when she held him in her hand for the first time.
After he finished adoring the little two wheeled beautiful thing, he was ready to take a ride on it. But he soon realised that it was a little big for him. He looked at me as if he was asking me “now what?” I had purposefully bought him a slightly bigger cycle without any balancing wheel because I wanted him to learn to tackle such little difficulties and also because he could use it for a longer time.
From that moment I was assigned a new responsibility - teach him to ride his new cycle. We decided to go to the park road where there is no traffic. He would sit on the seat and put his leg on the peddles and move forward while I hold the cycle from behind and prevent it from falling or even tilting. My wife was even happier as now her lazy husband is going to do some exercise as well. I was no less happy because I knew I would get a break from the tiring office thoughts and can spend more time with my son. After all, isn’t it more pleasing to watch your child laugh, play and learn than to sit idol in front of the modern DTH ‘informative box’.
This went well for a few days. My son would sit comfortably on the seat and peddle his cycle while I run behind it listening to his school stories and giggle. I slowly realised that it was time for him to learn the next step now that he learnt to peddle the cycle, steer it properly. He now has to learn to balance it all by himself. Come on, he cannot expect me to be behind him through his life. I have to retire one day and he will have to support himself both in cycling and in life. I slowly started to test if he can manage without help. He would initially go for a small distance before gently going to one side. I would hold the cycle before he even notices the difference. Each day the distance grew and grew. So one day I decided to let him go. The only mistake I did was I did not tell him that he has already mastered the talent. I realised this only when he hit and fell and injured his knee. As soon he fell down he turned and looked to find me running from a distance. He started to cry. I rushed to him, lifted him from the ground shook off the small grains of sand on his body. Minute drops of blood tinted his little knee. I tried to console him. He just looked at me and continued crying. I decided to take him back home and lifted the cycle and checked it. Besides minor scratches, the cycle was just fine.
I felt guilty. Guilty for my son’s wound. I felt that it was not his knee that hurt him but the realization that his father left him to his fate. He trusted me. He would have expected me to hold him so that he could smile and say, “I have no fear daddy. I know you won’t leave me”. But now, I am responsible for his wounded knees. He has realized that his father just cheated him. He did not keep his promise to teach him cycling, instead waited till he crashed and hurt himself. I didn’t know what to tell my son who was resting on my shoulders weeping.
Just then, my son, in a very soft voice, as if in a Trans or something, asked me “daddy, will you teach me cycling tomorrow?” to my surprise, there was hope glittering in his eyes.

Diwali Rasam

2011, Oct 26. Diwali
The uninterrupted bursting of cracker gave me sleepless night. Felt extremely tired when I woke up in the morning, but it was a long day to go. Had hell al lot of plans - movie, outing and more. Got up... got ready... only to find that it was raining outside. OH!!! Everything’s a flop now. The plan was cancelled. For a moment I wished if I was at home. Its’ was borther’s birthday (Diwali too) and I am gonna spend the day all by myself... just watching TV... the thought suffocated me. It was luck by chance that I got an extra holiday and I didn’t wanna spend it in my room watching TV.
It was just then I got a call. Picked it up with no much hope.
Me: hi Appanna...:)
He: hi, do u know to make rasam?
Me: rasam? Hahaha... yeah, why?
He: ok, come home. Let’s cook.
Me: ok... am not very sure about rasam, but let’s give it a try. Give me half an hour.
When I reached his house, he had kept everything ready for me. He said very enthusiastically “every thing is here, you just have to cook.” And he pointed at an onion cut to four pieces!!!
“That’s it??? Where are the rest of the things?” I couldn’t hide my surprise.
“That’s it ma, everything will be here. You find them. In case of doubt, don’t ask me. I know nothing”. That was an easy counter for him and he said that so innocently, I just giggled.
“ I need a tomato, some mustard, pepper powder, rasam masala, salt, curry leaves, coriander leaves, garlic, and all that.” It was more like an order, poor Appanna, had to fetch them asap.
I started to cut the onions into smaller pieces, found some salt and garlic and made tamarind juice by the time he was back with curry leaves and mustard.
Where’s tomato??? Came my instant response.
“We don’t put tomatoes in rasam ma” immediately came the answer. “Do you want to make it in Kerala style?” I was not sure how to reply, but I knew I needed tomatoes. Ok Kerala rasam - so be it. He bought them quickly. He had to go back to get some pepper powder and rasam masala as we couldn’t find them in his kitchen. (Honestly, Sirisha, his wife, would kill him if she come to know about the status of his kitchen).
Once we got every ingredient ready, the bowl was placed on the fire and oil was poured. The mustard crackled with rhythm of the crackers that were continuously bursting. Onions, masalas and other things were added... the rasam was almost ready and I was about to close the vessel, when I noticed something on the cutting board. The finely cut ripe tomatoes!!!! “Appannaaa!!!!!!” I cried in astonishment and scared him to death. He came running to the kitchen expecting a fire (or a cockroach at least). What happened ma???? “I forgot the tomatos!!!!! :(”... I could sense that he had no clue what to do about it from the empty blink he gave me. I decided that there was nothing much to be done. I fried the tomatoes separately with rasam powder and pepper powder and added them to the rasam I was preparing. After five minutes, the great “Kerala Style” rasam was ready. Meanwhile Appanna, made some scrambled eggs which he called fried egg and cooked rice and Daal.
As the Diwali crackers kept bursting at window shattering decibels... we enjoyed our Diwali Lunch in peace. The day I expected to be boring was made interesting with just a phone call. Thanks Appanna.
(I do not claim that the rasam was awesome, the extra pepper made it too hot that Appanna rang up my brother at home and reported the risk he took by inviting me to cook)

“അപ്പുറത്തെ ബാല്കണിയില്‍ നിന്നും ചെയ്യാം , next balcony is the best balcony”.

Man Proposes...

-->

The twin brothers of mine, 10 years elder, sweet, smart, handsome, talented, intelligent and well occupied. One ended up in the IT field earning lakhs and the other as a bank manager counting money. They look very much alike, grew up together, studied in the same school - same class - same bench, played with the same bat and ball and even shared the same cycle. Yet they grew up to become two different individuals with opposite likes and dislikes. One knew exactly what he wanted and planned everything much in advance. The other was also hard-working but does not plan life ahead. For him things were just trial and error. Even in the case of love both of them showed their opinion. The banker waited for his love to find him one day, mean while he could plan out his future life. And the other fell in love for three times and believed it to be his true love every time till the last moment he decided to break up with his girlfriends. I sometimes wondered if it’s their respective jobs that moulded them into this character or if they accidently landed on them.
The time had come for them to make their choices. Marry a girl and settle down. Proposals that my relatives forwarded were flooding my house. The photographs of beautiful girls lay scattered in the drawing room, dining table, bed room and even the kitchen. The elderly would form groups among themselves and settle down in different parts of the house and analyse each proposals. I don’t know if they were actually trying to find a ‘good’ girl for my brothers as what mattered to the men the most was financial background and beauty for the women. Seldom do both match and it was almost never that they agreed on any one girl (or money/ beauty).
It reminded me of my mom and her sister shopping for sarees. Saris of different colour, style, price, quality and names would lie all around them as they discuss the value of each for hours before buying one of them. Usually, such decisions do not always survive. Even before reaching home, they often lose interest in the saree they have purchased and both of them won’t want it anymore.
Here too, making a decision was not easy as everyone held on to their opinion and in case if they want to settle on one girl, they would settle it on the ground that she is not fit for the family. Meanwhile, my brothers & I had fun passing comments on the rejected ones and making stories about them. I would sit and laugh along with them even though I was aware of the fact that quiet soon my photo will also be in the hands of some brothers and sisters who would treat it the same way.
This went on for days till one morning both my brothers announced that they have found out their life partners. It was a happy moment for the family, “Ghar ke 2 bade bêtone ladki doondliye hai. Shaadi keliye theyyar hojavo”. Little did we know what was to happen next. Who would have guessed that the twins who grew up to become two different individuals will once more become one in their choice? Yes, they both wanted the same girl and were not ready to compromise.
There was a chaos in the family. “ghar ke 2 bade bête shaadi karnewaale hai or woh bhi ek hi ladki ko? Kabhi nahi hosaktha”. One of them had to sacrifice, but whom? One pronounced that he has already planned his life with her and now there is no turning back while the other claimed that she is the only girl whom he would accept in his life. After much confusion the decision was made. Not among my brothers, but among the seniors in the family- that the decision shall be left to the girl. There was nothing much she had to do, both the boys look alike and earn similar salaries. All she had to do was to choose if she wanted to be Ms. IT professional or wife of Mr. Bank manager, simple. Whatever it was, I was happy for her. At least she has options to choose from and needn’t adjust to the one who choose her.
And finally the day came. Both the families met, the girl was called and asked what her decision was. The two grooms sat smiling hoping to impress the bride and praying that she make ‘the right choice’ “magar yeh tho... koyi na jane... ki uski manzil... thi kahaaa”. All of a sudden the girl started crying surprising the others in the house. No one knew what to do and the boys sat idle wondering what went wrong. Slowly she started to speak only to reveal that she is in love with some guy in her college and is even ready to elope with him and if someone tried to stop her she would hang herself. I was laughing deep within hearing all these. Thank God! Atlast she found the guts to tell it out.
Gradually everyone came into sense and moved close to the girl and comforted her and promised her that everything will be just fine. In the end both my brothers had to compromise. No one lose and the girl wins.
Till today it was MAN PROPOSES AND GOD DISPOSES but today it has become –
MAN PROPOSES AND GIRL DISPOSES.

For just one Moment.

Just one moment, I forgot everything
Vicinity vanished, there was nothing left.
& the sound around melted into sweet murmurs
Like someone singing a lullaby only for me.
Slowly into bliss, I felt as if I was floating away
And the sweet voice kept calling me closer and closer
Until it woke me up and I opened my eyes to the day light
Only to find my teacher in her full-fledged anger.

thanks ma

Ma, thanks for my life's best insight.
i realize - what's perfect and complete
hardly is eternal.
except for the love we share.
